Skinner to start in goal for Penguins in Game 1 of Eastern 1st Round
This is totally different, although. Instead of Connor McDavidSkinner performs behind Sidney Crosby. Instead of the Edmonton Oilers, he is with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Skinner was named by Penguins coach Dan Muse as his starter for Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round in opposition to the visiting Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday (8 pm ET; SN-PIT, NBCSP, ESPN, SN, TVAS). Arturs Silovs will function the backup.
“I think no matter what way you go, you’re going to have a good team,” Skinner mentioned. (*1*)
Muse introduced his starter after an elective morning skate Saturday for Pittsburgh (41-25-16), the No. 2 seed in the Metropolitan Division. Philadelphia (43-27-12) is the No. 3 seed in the Metropolitan.
“I think there’s a lot of things that go into any lineup decision,” Muse mentioned Friday. “I feel, you realize, generally from group to group and yr to yr, various things come up. I feel all data is nice data. You type of need to take all of it in. That’s how you decide.
“We’re looking at all factors. As I’ve said multiple times, I think both guys have been great for us. Both guys are a big part of why we’re here today.”
Skinner was acquired Dec. 12 in the commerce that despatched goalie Tristan Jarry to the Oilers. He has performed 27 video games since, yet another than Silovs’ 26 in that span. Skinner was 12-9-5 with a 2.99 goals-against common and .885 save proportion this season for Pittsburgh; Silovs was 19-12-8 with a 3.07 GAA and .888 save proportion.
“It’s been great,” mentioned Silovs, who’s in his first full NHL season at age 25. “I like him, as a guy, too. I think we’re trying to be, like, two pillars, trying to hold the net as best as we can. We made the playoffs, so it’s a new page and a new chapter to write.”
In most methods, the goalies appear laborious to differentiate. Stanley Cup Playoff expertise is not one. Skinner performed 38 playoff video games the earlier two seasons, together with 12 in the Cup Final. Silovs has performed 10 in his profession.
“I think the experience that I have gotten has been extremely valuable,” Skinner mentioned, “as a result of simply going into the primary spherical and going in opposition to Philly, there’s simply an understanding of the way it works, the emotions that go into the playoffs, the emotional curler coaster. So, having the ability to undergo it, get loads of video games in, clearly, high-end video games, with the Finals being performed and whatnot, with all that, I feel I’ve discovered a lot about myself and I’ve discovered loads, simply from my previous experiences, what it actually seems to be like, what it actually looks like being in it.”
And Skinner is aware of, maybe higher than most, that it isn’t at all times fairly.
He allowed 11 targets on 58 pictures (.810 save proportion) in the primary two video games in opposition to the Los Angeles Kings in the Western Conference First Round final season. Edmonton received the ultimate 4 video games with Calvin Pickard in web. Skinner did not start once more till Game 3 of the second spherical, making 20 saves in a 4-3 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights.
McDavid and Leon Draisaitl helped these Oilers rebound. Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Erik Karlsson and Kris Letang could possibly be known as upon for these Penguins.
“It feels great being around these guys,” Skinner mentioned. “I imply, excellent, excellent teammates. Obviously, these guys have been by it. They understand how to get it carried out. They understand how to get the job carried out. They’ve been so supportive with me. They’ve been wonderful teammates to me.
“Honestly, I’m just very grateful and honored to be playing by their side this time around.”
