Jeff Probst on Competing in Immunity Challenge on Survivor 50
SPOILER ALERT: This article accommodates spoilers from “I Deserve All of This,” the ninth episode of “Survivor”Season 50.
It seems, getting off the sofa is not really easy in spite of everything. Jeff Probst realized precisely that over the summer season when he added one other title to his “Survivor” abstract beneath host and showrunner: competitor. Variety was on set in Fiji through the filming of Wednesday’s episodethroughout which Probst took half in his first immunity problem.
During the competitors, he made a facet guess with the castaways — if 4 of them might outlast him, they’d get a bag of rice. Ozzy, Joe, Tiff and Jonathan comply with the guess, so Probst solely needed to outlast one of them. And spoiler alert: he could not do it.
“My forearms are still sore,” Probst mentioned, two days after the problem. In this particular competitors, the castaways needed to maintain onto a deal with with a rope wrapped round it. At the tip of the rope is a bucket that holds a proportion of every contestant’s pre-game physique weight. Probst lasted for seven-and-a-half minutes — which continues to be fairly spectacular. And after the problem was over, he rewarded the group with their bag of rice and even signed the bag with a Sharpie.
(It wasn’t shocking that Joe ended up profitable immunity this time round. During his season, 48, he set the report for the longest to do it, lasting 52 minutes.)
“It was so much harder than I thought,” Probst informed Variety. In reality, earlier than he began, he wasn’t positive he ought to give it his all. “I had this thought: Don’t outlast too many people, because it’ll seem rigged and no one will believe it. And turns out, I could barely outlast anyone. There was no concern about someone thinking this was staged.”

From the second he started, he realized the issue: “You take the handles and click on them again, and immediately, I truthfully thought, there’s received to be one thing flawed with my bucket. Did the artwork division play a joke on me? Is there a joke that I do not find out about? I requested! I’ll admit I even went to mattress considering: Was my station arrange the identical as theirs? Even although I do know it was as a result of I used to be ensuring of it! But I assumed, how can it’s this troublesome? And I’m match, I labored out. I did pull-ups, I had a grip. I had no extra time.
After he dropped, he says, he got here up with “a litany of excuses” in his head for why he did not win. “I was disappointed and surprised, and then immediately, I started justifying. ‘Well, I was also hosting, and I’m very depleted from the last year and a half of trying to produce the show,'” he says. “The truth is Probst, it wasn’t your day. Just admit it and step away!”
It’s been 25 years of “Survivor,” and this was one of the eye-opening experiences Probst has had but — and that is saying quite a bit.
“Beyond the fun of the twist, it was really informative to me. It’s very difficult to do these things. I happened to pick one that was more strength-based, but even watching someone just stand on a narrow beam and balance a ball, I will never again look at it the same way,” he says. “And I’m the one saying, ‘It’s so easy to talk about how well you could do when you’re sitting at home.’ I’ve been that guy for 25 years. “I finally got off the couch myself, and I will never be the same.”
He was additionally thrilled that it went the way in which it did. “I was so happy that the players embraced me and then made fun of me, and gave me what I deserved, which is 25 years of smack talk,” Probst mentioned. “I had a blast with it, and they got rice. They earned it, which is what the fans want.”
