Pope has unique perspective as both player and coach in NCAA Tournament
ST. LOUIS – Mark Pope is in an elite group as somebody lucky sufficient to play and coach in the NCAA Tournament.
He reached the head as a player, workforce captain for the 1996 NCAA Tournament champions, one of many biggest groups ever assembled.
As a coach, I’ve led BYU to the large dance and has now reached the match in his first two seasons in Kentucky. Last 12 months resulted in a Sweet 16 end and this 12 months the Cats face Iowa State on Sunday with the prospect to return.
So which is extra significant – doing it as a player or teaching a workforce on that stage?
“As a player, you’re having so much of your own experience,” Pope mentioned. “You’re sharing it with your brothers, but so much of it is your own experience. As a coach, you are spending time trying to mentor every single one of your guys through it. So there might be more breadth in that.
“But it is a wonderful factor as a player and a coach,” he said, “and I do not know if there’s something that fairly compares.”
One would think, however, that being the coach and not being on the court to physically determine the outcome would be far more stressful, the same way a parent worries about how their child might perform.
“When you do it properly, I believe there’s some peace there,” Pope said. “When you will discover an area the place you are actually centered, I believe the perfect coaches discover a house the place they’re actually centered on the method and not utterly weighed down by the result. I believe that results in higher outcomes.
“I’ll float wildly between the two where I’m consumed with the outcome and some times where I can stay focused on the process,” he mentioned. “But I actually think when you’re doing it right, when you can be really focused on the process and really focused on trying to understand what your guys need in the moment and be really dialed in there. It doesn’t feel frantic or overwhelming at all. It feels pretty peaceful and it feels like you’re just working towards putting your guys in the best position to play.
“The greatest a part of this sport will get fairly boring when it does not have any option to develop you or train you,” Pope said. “Humility, individuals which are humble are the individuals that may develop the quickest and develop essentially the most. There’s no disgrace in not being excellent in this sport. That’s really being fairly genuine and actual.”
That’s not to say the job of parenting isn’t a huge part of the process.
“Outside of the court docket, I believe it feels extra like a dad or mum,” Pope said. “As you are watching your guys attempt and develop and determine life, and in our case determine how one can be nice males and determine how one can construct lives which are significant and fulfilling, I believe that half feels extra just like the parenting half the place you are worried.”
