Heastie clarifies comments opposing Hochul’s announcement

State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie had a softer tone on the place finances negotiations with Gov. Kathy Hochul stood on Friday — a day after he pushed again on her assertion the deal was performed.

“We had a really good conversation. I think, like I said, my issue was never with her,” Heastie mentioned. “I really feel like I’ve a tremendous relationship with the governor. My concern was extra of the method. And I do suppose we’re very shut on a finances, and I anticipate that we’ll get it performed in brief order.”

As is typical for Albany, the finances — which is overdue — is being tied to a number of coverage initiatives, together with crackdowns on so-called “super speeders,” pension profit adjustments and a buffer zone round homes of worship throughout protests.

On Thursday, Heastie pushed again towards that association:

“There’s no deal,” he mentioned. “I’m saying this to y’all very clearly: I’m never doing this again. Budgets are supposed to be about money, not politics.”

Heastie shared what he thinks is holding up the finances on Friday.

“Probably conceptual agreement on, on some of the policy things. But, you know, I would feel that budgets are about fiscal documents. And we have to finalize the Medicaid budget. We have to finalize, you know, education, what we’re doing in, and higher education. So, like I said, we’re close and I think it’ll get done soon,” Heastie mentioned.

Among points impacting town: a push to alter how the state offers funding to highschool districts, with a view to enhance cash for college students who reside in short-term housing.

“I think that’s going to happen in this budget. But those are some of the details we still have to work out.”
