The internet thinks a Fallout 3 Remaster is coming tomorrow
On Tuesday, the season two finale of Amazon Prime Video’s Fallout series hits the platform. The season has been a hit with critics and audiences alike, and we’re keen to see where the showrunners go in the final episode.
At the start of the new year, while episodes were releasing weekly, a rumor hit the internet and that rumor has found legs in the last week or so. That rumor is that Bethesda is getting ready to stealth launch a Fallout 3 Remaster. This because Bethesda dropped a remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion out of nowhere in April last year.
A remaster of arguably one of the most highly regarded Fallout games coinciding with the finale of Fallout Season 2 makes a bit of sense, but it also doesn’t.
For one, Bethesda probably wants folks to play Fallout 76, its live service game. Players are more likely to make repeat purchases in that game compared to Fallout 3, which is a once-off purchase. In fact, Bethesda is hosting a free week of access in Fallout 76 until 4th February, so releasing a Fallout 3 Remaster, right in the middle of the free week of its current darling makes little business sense.
However, there are some reasons to hold out hope that a Fallout 3 Remaster is coming.
Over on Steam, searching for the curated Fallout page will suggest there are 12 results for games, when the page is visited however, there are only 10 results. Many have taken this to mean that Bethesda has two hidden titles that it will reveal sometime in the future. We aren’t sure how to interpret this, but it is curious and worth mentioning.
A remaster of Fallout 3 makes sense given that the story somewhat mirrors that of the Fallout series. A child leaves the vault to find their father only to discover the surface is far worse than the bullies in the vault. While season two of the show takes place in Vegas, we suspect that if the related game – Fallout: New Vegas – is getting a remaster, it will be after Fallout 3 gets one.
The rumor of the remaster is spurred by documents that were leaked ages ago, which many brushed off until last year’s stealth Oblivion launch. The aforementioned documents also suggested that Fallout 3 was being remastered.
We’re sure that like us, Fallout 3 was the first taste of the franchise for many. It was the first game where players could play in first person view. While some may say that nostalgia is a powerful thing and the game isn’t as good as some many remember. To that we say, if it was good enough for Bethesda to carry the game engine through to the 2018 with Fallout 76 so, how bad could it really be?
If you are looking to play some Fallout games, Steam is hosting a Fallout Franchise sale that ends on 6th February. You can pick up every game in the series, for R969.92. We do suggest holding off on that until Wednesday morning though, just in case the rumors are true.
