Supreme Court voids majority Black congressional district in Louisiana

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down Louisiana’s second majority Black congressional district in a choice that might open the door for Republican-led states to remove Black and Latino electoral districts that are inclined to favor Democrats and have an effect on the stability of energy in Congress.

The courtroom’s conservative majority discovered that the district, represented by Democrat Cleo Fieldsprimarily based too closely on race. Chief Justice John Roberts had described the district as a “snake” that stretches greater than 200 miles (320 kilometers) to hyperlink components of the Shreveport, Alexandria, Lafayette and Baton Rouge areas.

“That map is an unconstitutional gerrymander,” Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the six conservatives.
