Quarryville native Johnny Weir to comment at Olympics; still alive on ‘Traitors’ | Entertainment

Social media photos of Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski reclining atop a row of suitcases can mean just one thing: The figure skating broadcasters — and fashion mavens — are headed for their biennial gig at another Olympic Games.

Quarryville native Weir and his broadcasting bestie, Lipinski — along with their other regular sports broadcast partner, Terry Gannon — will again provide expert analysis at the figure skating competitions at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy.

Fans of the TV reality competition “The Traitors” are also awaiting the fate of both Weir and Lipinski. Neither have been eliminated from the fourth season of the show, which will stream its eighth episode on Thursday on Peacock.

Weir and Lipinski, both veteran Olympic figure skaters themselves, will provide commentary at the Olympics from the team event on Friday, Feb. 6, to the final skating exhibition gala on Saturday, Feb. 21, on NBCUniversal networks including NBC and USA, and streaming on Peacock. The figure skating events will be held in the Milano Ice Skating Arena.

The pair has been providing analysis for broadcast audiences together since the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

They are known for being fashion-forward as they do their jobs, sometimes dressing in coordinated outfits in the announcers’ booth and on the streets of Olympic host cities.

In this October 2020 file photo, figure skating analysts Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski talk during the US Figure Skating Championships in Detroit. The duo, along with their broadcast partner Terry Gannon, will provide rink-side commentary during the Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy; figure skating will take place in the Milano Ice Skating Arena. The pair is also featured on season 4 of “The Traitors” on Peacock.

Weir and Lipinski have helped host the broadcasts of the closing ceremonies at the Pyeongchang (South Korea), Tokyo, Beijing and Paris Olympics; have done cultural commentary at the Summer Games and fashion commentary for such events as the Kentucky Derby and the Academy Awards; were judges on “Project Runway”; and hosted two seasons of “Wedding Cake Championship” on the Food Network.

Weir, who moved from Quarryville to Delaware with his family during middle school so he could train as a skater, is a three-time US national champion in men’s figure skating and a two-time Olympian.

Twenty years ago this month, Weir was at a different Italian Winter Olympics — in Torino in 2006 — as a competitor.

Lipinski won the 1998 Olympic gold medal in women’s figure skating.

Both Weir and Lipinski are among the 12 celebrity contestants still in the running on “The Traitors” fourth season, filmed in a Scottish castle.

There are five more episodes in the fourth season, airing Feb. 5, 12, 19 and 26, with both the finale and reunion episodes airing back to back on Feb. 26. “Traitors” episodes drop at 9 pm Thursdays on Peacock.

Quarryville native Johnny Weir, shown here in a 2021 appearance on “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” will provide expert analysis for figure skating competitions during the upcoming Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina, Italy.

Weir has also competed on reality competitions and game shows including “The Masked Singer,” “Dancing with the Stars,” “Match Game,” “Wheel of Fortune” and “Family Feud.”

In 2024, Weir made a video in support of the Quarryville Library Center after some of its municipal funding was pulled over concerns about LGBTQ+ content.

On a recent episode of the “Two Guys, Five Rings” podcast, featuring “Las Culturistas” podcast stars Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang, Weir and Lipinski talked about their friendship and their years of providing broadcast commentary for the Olympics and other major skating competitions throughout the year.

Lipinski said on the podcast that she and Weir were doing commentary for two different events when they wound up sitting together and talking about handbags. They became fast friends and realized they have chemistry together, and soon pitched themselves to NBC as a broadcast duo for the 2014 Olympics.
