Philly schools announce virtual instruction Monday ahead of a forecast blizzard


As a blizzard anticipated to dump vital snowfall on the area bore down, faculty districts throughout the area made the decision: Monday courses are canceled — or moved to on-line instruction.

The Philadelphia School District made the decision early — on Saturday — calling a virtual instruction day for Monday.

“While we work to the greatest extent possible to keep schools open for in-person learning to accelerate student achievement, we also consider the staff members who are commuting from across the region and keep the safety of students and staff as our top priority,” Superintendent Tony B. Watlington Sr. mentioned in a message to households and employees.

The district gave college students one full snow day in January however has no extra cushion constructed into its calendar to fulfill the Pennsylvania Department of Education’s requirement for 180 educational days.

Any additional inclement climate days may even be virtual studying days, Watlington mentioned.

“After Monday, if schools need to remain closed due to inclement weather, the district will provide an update to parents, guardians and employees regarding remote learning,” Watlington mentioned.

Among different districts that known as for no faculty Monday: Camden, Cherry HillEvesham, Moorestownand Washington Township in New Jersey; and Downington, Lower Merionand Neshaminy in Pennsylvania.

Central Bucks, Pennsbury, Rose Tree Media and Upper Darby have moved to virtual instruction.
