Bill Self says coaching future at Kansas to be determined
SAN DIEGO — Longtime Kansas coach Bill Self stated after Sunday’s season-ending loss to St. John’s that he has not but decided about his coaching future.
“I’ll get back and get with family and visit and see what’s going on,” Self stated after the Jayhawks lost 67-65 on a buzzer-beater within the second spherical of the NCAA event. “I love what I do, I need to be able to do it where I’m feeling good and healthy to do it fairly well. I’ll get back home, and it’ll all be discussed.”
Self then clarified that his choice is not going to be based mostly on any on-court components however relatively on his well being.
Self, 63, has handled a number of health-related points in recent times.
In 2023, he underwent “standard heart catheterization” after complaining of chest tightness and missed that postseason. In July 2025, he was hospitalized after experiencing “some concerning symptoms,” then underwent a process to have two stents inserted into his coronary heart two days later.

“I’m not making any statements whatsoever,” stated Self, who’s 634-167 since taking on at Kansas in 2003, profitable two nationwide championships. “When you get to be doing it as long as I’ve done it, I look at it in five-year increments. Now I’m probably looking at it in more two-year increments, so to speak. So I try to focus on this season and try to get us to a second weekend, which we failed at. So I’ll go back now and break it down and see where those leads.”

“One of the things that makes [the tournament] so great is that it can be great, but it can also be cruel,” Self stated. “I’m certainly disappointed, sad for our guys, because they tried so hard. But just a tough afternoon.”

“I actually believe that we need to do a really good job evaluating and recruiting,” Self stated. “I just think in today’s time, the next four to six weeks will be indicative to the question that was asked earlier: ‘How can you improve yourself moving forward?’ The next four to six weeks will be the most important time to do that.”
