All state offices, public schools, UH campuses to close Monday

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Gov. Josh Green announced all state offices and Department of Education schools on all islands will be closed Monday as severe weather continues to impact Hawaii.

Hawaii News Now declared Sunday and Monday First Alert Weather Days with potentially damaged winds, heavy rainfall, and isolated thunderstorms possible.

The governor held a press conference Sunday with state deputy general Stephen Logan, Department of Transportation director Ed Sniffen and National Weather Service warning coordination meteorologist John Bravender. Watch the full update above.

Affected state employees will receive administrative leave for the day. Essential personnel and emergency response workers should follow guidance from their supervisors.

Monday was scheduled to be Teacher Institute Day for public school educators in Bargaining Unit 05 on Oahu.

The Hawaii State Teachers Association says it will be rescheduled, and a replacement date will be announced in the coming days.

Neighbor island Institute Day is still scheduled to take place on Friday, Feb. 13, HSTA said.

All University of Hawaii campuses will be closed on Monday due to dangerous weather conditions, particularly high winds impacting the state.

The Hawaii State Legislature will be closed.

The Judiciary will be closing all state courthouses and operations Monday. Filing deadlines have been extended to Tuesday and all hearings will be rescheduled. The Judiciary will issue its own message with additional details.

In advance of these conditions, the governor issued an emergency proclamation to mobilize state resources and support response efforts.

The proclamation is effective through Wednesday, Feb. 11, and may be extended as conditions warrant.

“The safety of our residents and visitors is our top priority,” said Green. “We know this storm system could bring conditions that make travel unsafe and threaten property. Please take this time to secure your home, check on loved ones and heed guidance from emergency officials. Hawaiʻi is strongest when we look out for one another — and that starts with being prepared.”
