Taz Skylar Homaged His Mom in Sanji One Piece Season 2 Scene

And Skylar admits it was an intense ask, however one which was helped by the shared bond between the actors. “I definitely felt a lot of pressure of like, ‘Damn, don’t make this minute and a half the most boring part of the show, bro.’ But it was really special to be able to look into Emily’s eyes and say the speech and have her look at me with love in her eyes and understanding.” It was also extra special because this Sanji scene about mom and son was performed with Skylar’s own mom on set. He adds emphatically, “And we also shot that scene on my birthday, and my mom was in the tent watching scenes.”
Sometimes, acting can be all about leaving behind the person you are to slip into another skin. But the best acting also taps into a vein of truth and real human emotion to bring characters to life in a way that resonates in our own hearts. And that’s exactly what happened with Skylar in this scene. Rudd, also part of our interview, reminds him, “And you used your mom’s accent!”
“I used my mom’s voice!” Skylar crows with true delight, “I’m so glad you remember that!”
He explains that he homaged his own mom within the dialogue about Sanji’s, “There’s this bit the place he references his mom, and there is this bit the place he quotes his mom there, and I used my mom’s voice and accent to cite that line. It will ceaselessly sound like my mother.”
The rest of the cast agrees it is an incredibly sweet gesture, and we do too. And undoubtedly, imbuing his own mom into Sanji’s mom is what makes the dialogue ring so true, melting our hearts and bringing tears to our eyes. You can hear Sanji’s mom, kissed by Taz Skyler’s own, when Sanji says, “Oh my little prince, what have you brought for me today?” in one piece season two episode eight. And you can really hear the accent change in Skylar’s voice during that moment.
Additionally, Skylar shares how Sanji’s whole other tragic historybut also his mom’s influence, really impacts the character in the live-action. He notes, “Well, I feel in our live-action, the best way that Sanji is, his relationship with girls, which is way much less, I’d say a lot much less romanticized and way more like a care-based factor. My justification for it was at all times that I feel that it makes full sense as a result of girls had been the one individuals who had been good to him when he was rising up.
