‘I still don’t like those guys’
ARLINGTON, Texas (KBTX) – The sport was already effectively out of hand when UCLA switch middle fielder Will Gasparino rounded third and headed residence on the backside of the sixth.
In truth, it was that three-run residence run that finally ended Saturday’s Globe Life Field primary occasion towards Texas A&M after seven innings. UCLA, ranked both first or second in most polls, handed the Aggies their first lack of the season in 11-1 run-rule vogue.
The lopsided nature of the sport factored little in Gasparino’s thoughts as he trotted across the bases. He was set on having fun with that second.
For what appeared like an eternity because the slugger rounded third, he shot a chilly, unblinking stare into the Aggie dugout. It was apparent the one-time Texas Longhorn was attempting to make a press release.
“I don’t go to Texas anymore, but I still don’t like those guys,” Gasparino stated after the sport when requested about his residence run celebration. Saturday wasn’t the primary time sparks have flown between Gasparino and the Aggies.
Last season, when the Aggies and Longhorns squared off in Austin, former A&M first baseman Gavin Kash verbally clashed with a then-Longhorn Gasparino as Kash jogged off the sphere after a flyout. Gasparino stated one thing to Kash, which led the Aggie to confront Gasparino. Kash was finally ejected from the sport and was compelled to overlook the ultimate sport of the collection due to a suspension.
After that sport, A&M head coach Michael Earley stated it was Gasparino who began the incident. It gave the impression to be a carryover from two seasons prior when Gasparino ran via Kash on an in depth play at first base whereas Kash performed for Texas Tech.
“My first school was the University of Texas and they took me in and made me feel like home,” Gasparino stated after Saturday’s sport. “So, I think I owed it to those guys to put [A&M] to sleep early.”
In final 12 months’s Lone Star Showdown collection, Gasparino went 1-for-11 towards the Aggies with 4 strikeouts. The Bruin middle fielder went 2-for-4 Saturday, including two runs of his personal within the rout of his former rival. UCLA totaled 14 hits within the sport to A&M’s two.
“They were relentless up there,” Earley stated after Saturday’s sport. “Moving balls, two strikes, they played an awesome game. They completely outplayed us on that end and made us make plays and when they got balls to hit, they hammered them.”
Here is the sport rundown:
Why did A&M lose? There is a motive UCLA (8-2) sits atop a lot of the faculty baseball polls. The Bruins rank eighth within the nation in residence runs and twenty second in slugging proportion. Both Gasparino and potential No. 1 total MLB draft choose Roch Cholowsky lead the nation in residence runs with six.
Saturday proved no totally different for UCLA on the plate.
When Aggie starter Weston Moss left pitches a bit too excessive within the strike zone, the Bruins made him pay. That was particularly the case with two strikes. In the Bruins’ first eight hits, 5 got here with two strikes. Two of those hits produced RBIs.
“They completely commit to staying on a baseball with two strikes,” Earley stated. “They did an awesome job. That’s a real baseball team.”
UCLA plated 4 within the first inning, marking the primary time this season the Aggies (9-1) had given up runs within the opening body. Ultimately, that was all UCLA wanted.
Aggie designated hitter Jake Duer launched his second residence run of the season into the house bullpen in right-center to guide off the highest of the second. However, that was one in all solely two hits the Aggies might muster within the sport.
“I never want to get my ass kicked, but at the same time, sometimes you can take something good from it, right?” Earley stated of the loss. “You’ve got a choice to make. You can see an example of how it is and go back and see how you played compared to how they play. But, in the end, you’ve got to play better baseball. You win or you lose. We lost. It’s just never acceptable to lose like that.”
Who stood out? Bruin starter Michael Barnett (3-0) picked up the win, permitting one run on one hit in 5 innings. He struck out 4 on 78 whole pitches. He was changed by Wylan Moss, who allowed only one hit in two innings of labor.
Aggie reliever Gavin Lyons steadied the ship in three innings. UCLA managed one run on 5 hits towards the sidearm pitcher. I’ve struck out a pair.
What was a key stat? UCLA completed with six two-strike hits within the sport, accounting for 4 RBIs.
What’s subsequent? A&M finishes its time in Arlington with a 6:30 pm first pitch towards Arizona State. Right-hander Aiden Sims (2-0, 1.38 ERA) will make his third begin for A&M, reverse Arizona State right-hander Jaden Alba (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
