Guillermo del Toro receives highest recognition from the British Film Institute
The Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was awarded on Wednesday evening in London with the highest recognition from the British Film Institute (British Film Institute, BFI), throughout the group’s annual dinner.
De Toro obtained the award, BFI Fellowshipfrom the palms of Cate Blanchett, two-time Oscar-winning Australian actress, who additionally gained the British distinction in 2015 and starred in movies by Guillermo del Toro resembling The alley of misplaced souls and Pinocchio.

The 61-year-old Mexican director, winner of three Oscars, remembered his native nation when receiving the distinction at the dinner held in a central London lodge.
“For a man who for 30 years has tried to make the brutal and the beautiful coexist, I’ve never made a movie I wasn’t willing to die for.. I was born in Mexico, geographically, spiritually and physically, but over the years my soul has belonged to many parts of the worldincluding England, and the United Kingdom has given me a lot,” stated Del Toro.
Guillermo del Toro joins the distinguished checklist of BFI Fellowship recipients together with David Lean, Bette Davis, Akira Kurosawa, Ousmane Sembene, Elizabeth Taylor, Orson Welles, Martin Scorsese, Tom Cruise, Christopher Nolan, Tilda Swinton and Spike Lee, amongst others.
“The BFI protects not solely British cinema, but in addition cinema as an artwork type and retains that religion alive. That’s why this honor is so immense. I consider in the British Film Institute as a cultural beacon in a time after we are informed that tradition isn’t essential“said the Mexican.
During the award ceremony, Cate Blanchett praised the figure of Guillermo del Toro.
“Wild and entertaining, often hilarious and frequently terrifying, Guillermo del Toro offers a vision of what we must guard against, while reminding us what we must fight for and what we must preserve, as love, beauty, the life of the spirit and the touch of the human hand“said the Australian actress.
Jay Hunt, president of the BFI, defined Guillermo del Toro as “a benchmark of creative excellence.”
“He has remained unmistakably, stubbornly, gloriously true to himself. He has proven that fantasy can interrogate historical past, that horror can expose injustice, and that monsters can illuminate what it means to be human,” Hunt added.
