John Hannah reuniting with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz for fourth film in “The Mummy” franchise

The Mummy is reviving a beloved character for its subsequent installment.

John Hannah, who portrayed Jonathan Carnahan, the bumbling brother of Rachel Weisz‘s Evelyn in the trilogy, will return for the 2028 film, confirms Universal Pictures.

Academy Award winners Brendan Fraser and Weisz can even reprise their roles in the upcoming fourth film.

Fraser, like Hannah, appeared in all three mummy movies as Rick O’Connell, an American treasure hunter who depends on the Ancient Egyptian experience of librarian Evelyn, performed by Weisz in the primary two movies (she was changed by Mario Bello in 2008’s The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor).

Much of the unique 1999 blockbuster’s comedy reduction might be credited to Hannah, a Scottish actor who got here to prominence with dramatic roles in Four Weddings and Funeral and Sliding Doors. But, as I’ve recalled to Entertainment Weekly in 2021, he wasn’t instantly assured he had the chops.

“I struggled a bit doing The Mummy at first,” Hannah confessed. “I was like, ‘I don’t understand what I’m doing here!’ Brendan’s the hero, and Kevin [Jarre, screenwriter] was doing the comedy stuff. I’m like, ‘Steve [Sommers, director]’What’s my function?’ He said, ‘Just mess around in the background, and if it’s funny, we’ll cover it.'”

The upcoming fourth film might be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. The duo, known professionally as Radio Silencejust lately informed EW The Mummy It was “a dream project.”

“It’s just really, really beautiful and scary and sweeping, and it’s awesome,” Gillett stated of the brand new script whereas making the press rounds for Ready or Not 2: Here I Come in early March.

The Mummy grossed $422.5 million in 1999 and impressed an equally profitable 2001 sequel and third film The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor in 2008.
