Beam Institute Industry Conference reaches Kentucky and beyond
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 20, 2026) — The James B. Beam Institute for Kentucky Spirits (JBBI) took over the University of Kentucky’s campus this week for the annual James Beam Industry Conference. In partnership with the Kentucky Distillers’ Association (KDA), the convention serves all members of the trade in areas that embrace manufacturing, procurement, finance, branding, tourism and analysis.
Although 750 Kentuckians attended this 12 months’s convention, it has grown to incorporate 14 international locations, 39 states, Puerto Rico and Washington DC, with greater than 1,100 attendees.
The thought for the convention got here from the University of Kentucky’s mission of service. Seth DeBolt, Ph.D., JBBI director, and Ilka Balk, affiliate director, wished to supply one thing completely different to trade members.
“Inviting folks to campus allows us to showcase that, while we are a central hub for spirits education, we also support research and economic development,” Balk stated. “We wanted to offer something that didn’t feel transactional — experts speaking directly from their experience, their research.”
KDA has partnered in creating and internet hosting the convention since its inception, serving to to attach educational analysis with real-world trade functions via its in depth community of distillers, suppliers and companions.
“This is where the future of our industry takes shape,” stated Colleen Thomas, KDA vp of membership and operations. “By bringing together the researchers driving new discovery with the industry leaders navigating today’s realities, our partnership with JBBI creates a forum that doesn’t just reflect the industry — it helps define where it goes next.”
Also, for the primary time, the convention served because the launchpad for the class-crafted Wildcask Bourbon. Students in in UK’s commercialization of distilled spirits course unveiled the second release of Wildcask Bourbona student-created model developed at JBBI. After working since August to refine the mix and branding, the category produced a brand new 2026 version that builds on the success of the inaugural launch whereas introducing its personal distinctive character. The bourbon — crafted from a fastidiously chosen mixture of 4 sourced whiskeys and bottled at 100 proof — was out there for presale completely to convention attendees, marking a hands-on milestone within the college students’ training and entrepreneurial expertise.
JBBI’s mission is to steer the worldwide development of the American whiskey trade via workforce training, scientific discovery, environmental sustainability, group and social duty. DeBolt stated this convention checks all these bins.
“Having the support of the university and the KDA is integral to this conference’s success,” DeBolt stated. “Each year I am thrilled for the opportunity to emphasize technology transfer, serve our industry partners, create a welcoming networking environment and be a platform for the next generation of the spirits workforce.”
The momentum of the convention shouldn’t be slowing down any time quickly. The eighth annual JBBI Industry Conference is March 15-17, 2027, on UK’s campus.
